Area Development Magazine, a national site selection publication, listed talent attraction and retention as the third most important factor in the site selection process for new businesses.

Availability of skilled workers trailed only highway accessibility and labor costs as the most important factors in locating a new business facility. Obviously, this is a major issue throughout the United States, and the Cape area is no different. Talent attraction and retention are key pieces to a successful economic development effort.

The Cape Chamber gets it and is doing several things to affect our labor pool. Capable is a new initiative launched with area educational institutions to focus on bolstering essential skills in our young people. The goal is to make them more employable after high school by teaching them “life” skills.

connectCape is another program that puts high school and University students in local businesses for job shadowing. Intended outcomes are creating a greater awareness of local employment options, resulting in more graduates staying in the area.

Externally, we are marketing the benefits of our region through a new website, capeishome.com. As you look to recruit and retain talent, please use this site as a tool. Cape is Home not only illustrates what people who have relocated to the area are saying about us, but it is also a hub of information for all things someone considering moving to the area would need.
